INDEPENDENT SYDNEY BASED RECORD LABEL - SHOP

Welcome to the Fog Blog.

"Revolutionising the music industry,

one day at a time"

We're big on ideas here in the office. Like, really big. We're an Ideas Factory. Just the other day I suggested that we book the Recital Hall in Sydney for one of our acts to play a launch at. "Imagine that?" I said. "One of our acts, playing his music in a concert hall".

Cutting edge, I reckon.

If there is one thing we all agree upon in here, it's that new technology is ace. Gadgets? Can't get enough of 'em. New ways to distribute music via the interweb? We're totally across it. Mobile phones with more features than we know what to do with? We've got one. Each. But can anyone get them to work? Or have you tried reading the instructions? It's like this: New sony product

"You can't spell STAR without A & R"

That's right kids. One of the fundamental truths of the music industry is that you will never make it unless you have a shit-hot A&R manager. Ideally he will have no musical ability whatsoever, questionable personal hygiene and a complete lack of morals and ethics. You will be uncomfortable in his presence (it's usually a he, unfortunately...) and then bitch about him when he fails to turn up to your gig. But you will love him... because he can make all your dreams come true. In fact you need him.

Who else is going to take your calls at 4am? Who else is going to pick up the bar tab after you've drunk all the rider and can't afford to buy your own beer because the record isn't selling? And who is going to take you to that fancy restaurant when they want to try and impress you? That's right. He may be a complete snake of an A&R man, but he's YOUR snake. And you will love him.

But seriously, there are still an awful lot of artists out there who believe in the Record Company Fairy. Despite all the evidence to the contrary, they still believe that if they leave their demo tape under their pillow when they go to bed, they will wake up in the morning with a recording contract. Personally I blame their parents, and to a certain extent, Australian Idol and the like. "Be true to yourself girlfriend"... yeah, and learning how to sing and write a song wouldn't go astray either.

Each week we will endeavour to bring you a real life hilarious take on the A&R process. And if you have one of your own, feel free to email them to at peter@soundslikecafe.com

The Chart Chart

The Australian music industry is a funny old thing. We all kind of know each other, most of us have worked together at some time or another... and yet for such a small market, we have an awful lot of charts. In last weeks Music Network, I counted 61 different charts. That's nearly one each! Maybe we need a Chart Chart. You know? Something to keep track of the charts...

1. The ARIA Chart - Number one after a record number of weeks

2. The Sanity/Virgin/HMV chart - still number two!

3. The digital download chart - this is a new entry

4. The DVD chart - always threatening the top spot, just never quite getting there

5. The Dance chart - who knew we still cared?

Or maybe not...

Speaking about revolutionising the music industry, who said drummers aren't full of ideas? Check this out for a new way of doing things.

The Wisdom of Rock Stars

Rock Stars... is there anything they don't know? Well, apparently there is... Jon Bon Jovi is losing his hair. Frankly, we've all known about this for a long time, Jon. Those stage lights don't leave much to the imagination. But hey, if you want to go all out on some crazy hair loss treatment, by all means. Has anyone got Warnie's number for poor old JBJ?

Michael Peter Tickets

If you'd like to check out Michael Peter on his current tour, drop us a line here and we'll get your name on the door. Particularly if you're in Darwin this week. Or WA next week.
