Welcome to the Fog Blog #11

Just plain old revolutionising the music industry this week…

Everyone is entitled to my opinion...

We were lucky enough to attend the recent launch of ABC Digital Radio. Although it meant taking valuable time out of our busy day, we joined about 150 others down at Circular Quay for a lovely mid-morning soiree. Amongst some of the music industry’s heavyweights and ABC execs, we were informed that not only are the ABC launching three new digital stations, but they also have another four licenses up their sleeves for other genres.

The three stations launched were ABC Dig (Adult Contemporary), ABC Jazz and ABC Country. Isn’t that lovely? Even jazz fans can now listen to their favourite music on their steam powered computers… which made me think, what other genres could the ABC get behind? A blues/roots station would be a good start… but what about a metal station?

How awesome would that be?

Any volunteers to help me run it?

The Revolution Will Be Powered by Microsoft… huh?

If you have been reading the Fog Blog religiously, you will know about Spotify. Unfortunately it is not available here yet, but it’s threatening to “revolutionise the music industry’... which is something that never fails to attract my attention. Basically it’s an application that will source whatever free music streams are available from the entire interweb and let you play music, store playlists etc… and never have to pay for music ever again. On the free version you will have to listen to about a minutes worth of ads per hour, but if you pay a subscription fee (which varies from territory to territory) you can avoid ads all together.

Great idea huh? Well, now Microsoft, who you may remember from such revolutionary musical ideas as the Zune, are looking to get in on the act. It’s not entirely clear how they intend to make money from this idea… but then they didn’t make any on the Zune, so who knows what the brainiacs in Silicon Valley are thinking of this time.

You can read more about this idea from Microsoft here.

Music + Golf = Artistic Death

Years ago during a job interview with a major record label, I was asked if I played golf. Instinctively thinking this was some sort of trick question, I decided to answer honestly and said No. “Oh well, that’s your career in the music industry over” came the reply.

That was 13 years ago, and although it was a funny response, it wasn’t entirely accurate. Having said that, I have tried to play golf over the years … I even have my own set of clubs that I swapped a smartphone for (I miss that phone…). And a lot of my heroes play golf. Alice Cooper plays off a single figure handicap, which my golfist friends assure is very good indeed. And KK Downing from Judas Priest recently launched his own tournament.

But all this pales into insignificance to Justin Timberlake’s latest venture. Despite only being in possession of a thimble full of musical talent, JT now has his very own golf course! Not bad for someone who hasn’t done anything original since “Like I Love You” in 2002.

As they say on the course JT… Fore!!
