Welcome to the Fog Blog #14

The music industry won’t revolutionise itself, you know?

Everyone is entitled to my opinion...

“Talking about music is like dancing about architecture…”

Depending on who you speak to, that quote was originally made by either Frank Zappa or Steve Martin. I’ve often pondered its meaning. Well, not that much… but it’s a great line when you want to sound like you really know it all.

Rest assured, this week there will be a LOT of talking about music. Maybe, maybe too much talking. There are a lot of experts out there when it comes to what is right or wrong in the music industry today. I do not profess to be an expert by any stretch of the imagination… there are way more opinionated talking heads out there than me… but I do know one thing… all that talking won’t solve anything.

What would be really helpful to the music industry would be encouraging everyone you know to go see more live gigs. After picking up the Drum Media in Sydney this morning, I was amazed at how small the gig guide has become. It used to be a double page spread covering the whole week. Now, it fits into less than a full page.

Not saying that would solve everything… but it would be better than talking about it.

A West Australian Lead Recovery?

Whilst the states fight over how the GST is distributed and the mining industry continues to drive the Australian economy, our very own Michael Peter is currently touring Western Australia through Aug/Sept in support of his “Something Along Those Lines” album.

He has scheduled, booked, promoted and is currently PLAYING over 15 shows in WA all on his own. Clever, hard working chap that he is.

Michael will be back in NSW to play the launch of Home Grown Roots Vol 4 at Lizotte’s on October 29. And then, maybe, time for a lie down…

Spotify: It’s not the saviour…

Well, who would have guessed…

Now that all the majors have taken an 18% stake in Spotify, questions are being asked about how the artists will actually get paid. That’s right, remember them? The people that actually make the music?

As Spotify is only available in Europe at the moment, it turns out that some well established acts who are getting a lot of plays via Spotify are only being paid a pittance. So, I wonder where that US$250 million is going?

No, not THAT John F. Kennedy

If you were in Sydney during the ‘80’s, you may remember the songs “The Texan Thing” and “King Street” by Newtown’s original troubadour John Kennedy.

John Kennedy and the 68 Comeback Special have a new album coming out via Blackmarket Music titled “Is This Not Paris”.

And now for your viewing pleasure, check out the video of the title track… filmed, naturally, in Newtown.
