Fog Blog

Welcome to the Fog Blog #18

Why don’t YOU do some Revolutionising this week, huh?

Everyone is entitled to my opinion...

Sometimes writing this blog is like shooting fish in a barrel.

An article in our esteemed industry publication tells me that the album Must Die. Their quoted expert says that perhaps labels should look at releasing a few four track EP’s instead of an album.

Wow! What a revelation. That’s what indie labels have been doing for years. Foghorn’s digital sales are already four times our physical sales (in terms of dollar value). If the market segments, you must segment with it. Major labels will not let the album die because it has been profitable for so long.

But they are not the Music Industry.

Just a large, slow lumbering part of it.

Isn’t There Someone More Qualified???

In the old days (the 90’s), major record companies had HUGE marketing departments. Nowadays there are less people doing more work. This is nothing terribly new to anyone who has been in the industry for any amount of time (like, since the 90’s) but can come as a shock to new acts that think getting a record deal is the Finish Line where all your dreams will magically come true and you’ll be on Packed To the Rafters. Or something.

I have been really enjoying watching the new album release campaigns for both Kisschasy and Bluejuice. They both have made really good albums and are coming from a solid position as far as having an established fan base is concerned. And they are both on independent labels who by their very nature have to be a little more creatively disposed to new ideas when it comes to marketing.

Either way, both of these acts are taking “Do It Yourself” to new levels.

Bluejuice - Broken Leg, extended clip

You should go and check out all the other Bluejuice clips... hilarious!

You Can’t Spell Star Without A&R

We had an intern in the office this week.

Keen, young, excited about being at a record label. Plays in a band. You name it.

So we got him to play DJ and listen to the back-log of demos that were sitting on the shelf next to the stereo.

And guess what? He didn’t like any of them either.

Fogsongs... talk about diversity!

This week we announced some new signings to Fogsongs.

Checkered Fist – Psychobilly from Newcastle

John Kennedy – the original Newtown troubador

Marcus Cornelius – Spoken word

How’s that for variety?

The boys from Checkered Fist are awesome and are potentially one of the biggest acts we have. In a couple of football season’s time they will be laying waste to pubs across the country. Mark my words… Keep Wrecking!

John Kennedy, for most of you Sydney-siders, will be a familiar name. He was the original singer to write songs about Newtown, before that other guy came along. He’s launching his name album at the Vanguard next week, September 30.

And Marcus Cornelius is currently touring the UK.

We are on fire.

What would Dave do??

He’d slap a backstage pass on a cute girls thigh, eat a strawberry and laugh!
