Revolutionising the music business every week…

Everyone is entitled to my opinion...

Two music venues in Sydney made the news this week and for very different reasons.

The Hopetoun Hotel in Surry Hills has closed due to… well, it’s difficult to say exactly why as there are a number of different stories floating around. Costs of renovating were blowing out, council problems and that typical Sydney issue, noise complaints from neighbours, have all been getting a run on the rumour mill. But whatever the real reason, the consequence of losing yet another quality music venue in Sydney will be potentially devastating. Is it too early to suggest a Hopetoun benefit concert, a’ la Sound Relief?

One venue that is definitely not closing is The Metro on George Street. Thanks to the lovely people at Alberts Music I was fortunate enough to attend the re-launch of this fabulous venue last night. Both the Seabellies and Dappled Cities played excellent sets, but the real star of the show was Sir Richard Branson who popped up to announce the new name for the venue. It is now called the Virgin Mobile Metro.

No, I don’t like it either… what next? The Telstra Espy?

Social Media…

All the kids are doing it…

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned a social media seminar I attended at APRA. It was put on by Millie Millgate and featured Ariel Hyatt who presented a fascinating insight into the world of social media and how it applies to marketing music. She kicked the seminar off with a great video presentation and thanks to the great god of You Tube I now present to you here.

Riders on the Storm

I really can’t remember if I have shared this with you before, but I came across this posting recently and thought it was worth running today.

Some of you may remember the story about Van Halen and their backstage rider that specified a bowl of M&M’s with all the brown ones removed. If there were any brown M&M’s in the bowl, they would cancel the show. This legendary story has taken on its own life with many people questioning its veracity and wondering whether it was all a stunt (like the new Vegimite name fiasco…).

But now, thanks to the wonders of the interweb, I can bring it to you…

The real No Brown M&M’s Rider. It’s my holy grail!

Obscurity Is Overrated

This video should have been in the blog a couple of weeks ago but I’ve had a back log of stuff that I’ve been trying to get through whilst attempting to keep things short and sweet (and hopefully, relevant) for you all.

Sam Hawksley is one of those criminally underrated yet extremely talented singer/songwriters that do everything right without ever getting the respect (and album sales) they deserve. Sam’s latest album, imaginatively titled “Sam Hawksley” contains this wonderful gem of a song… and the film clip is a cracker too.

What would Dave do??

He’d look thoughtfully at you whilst trekking through the jungle, no doubt.
