Fog Blog

Welcome to the Fog Blog #24

The revolution continues...

Everyone is entitled to my opinion...

My spiritual guru, Homer Simpson, once famously said;

“Rock Stars… is there anything they don’t know?”

I read with interest the article titled “Is the internet stifling new music?” that was written by John Taylor, bassist with Duran Duran. The story is taken from a speech made by Mr. Taylor at UCLA back in October where he puts forward the view that the internet is stifling the growth of “current, innovative culture” and draws a parallel between this apparent “slow down” in creativity with lay offs in the automotive industry in Detroit.

In the rest of this anachronistic and shallow piece, Mr Taylor expounds on how much of an impact Roxy Music had on him as a teenager and wonders whether current day teenagers would enjoy the same level of excitement he had back when music players were steam driven and the telephone had yet to be invented.

Personally I can’t understand how a member of Duran Duran could be remotely qualified to write about culture. That’s like me filling up this blog with my thoughts on astrophysics. And when did universities start letting members of English new romantic bands (bass players at that!) from the 80’s deliver speeches to students?

I think this has more to do with stifling the growth of culture and creativity than the internet.

Australian Idol: Celebrating Mediocrity Since 2003

The theme for this week’s Idol was Two Hours of Power. I saw little evidence of the latter, but it certainly felt like more than two hours. After the final four sang a version of “We Built This City” (does anyone remember Mike Moore from Frontline singing this in his car?) as the opening song, Nathan Brake was put out of his misery. He can now go and join the cast of Wicked or a West end version Phantom of the Opera…

James Johnston

James… poor James… it really wasn’t a good week for him. Kicking off the Two Hours Of Power show with Toto’s “Hold The Line” seemed to be some sort of musical contradiction in terms. He followed this with Extreme’s “More Than Words” where he played acoustic guitar to little effect. Saving his “best” till last, James had a crack at the Foo Fighters “Learn To Fly” where he donned a Gibson SG and with all the “awesome rock power” of Greg Brady as Johnny Bravo, proceeded to show the audience that this will be his last week.

Hayley Warner

Hayley got her night off to a really bad start by singing the U2 track “One”. This is one song that should NEVER be allowed to be covered by an Idol artist anywhere in the world. A cover band worthy reading of INXS’s “New Sensation” followed without any real excitement and it was left to her last performance “Bittersweet Symphony” to give her just barely enough to make it into the final two.

Stan Walker

Basically, Stan wiped the floor with the competition. He even managed to sing Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger” and not look like a complete idiot. His version of “It’s a Mans World” was spot on and even a god-bothering version of ”Amazing Grace” couldn’t dissuade me from anointing Stan as your next Australian Idol.

Fortunately there are only two weeks to go.

Fog Blog Gig Alert!

Believe it or not, I attended an actual live gig last week. And on a school night too!

A couple of us popped into Notes in Enmore to see Jill Barber from Canada where she was ably supported by our very own Michael Peter. Jill has been touring the country with Jeff Lang and has a wicked sense of humour in a lovely Canuck self-deprecating sort of way plus her backing musos were awesome.

But for me it was great to see Michael get up as first act on a Wednesday night to a largely seated audience who really didn’t know him at all and leave them all with a smile on their face. The amount of applause at the end of his set and the fact that he really worked the room with some clever audience participation was really heart warming.

If you want to sign up to his email list, drop me a line and I will get you added… you even get a FREE download if you do!

More Gigs

Wow, this will be two in as many weeks…

Coming up this Saturday night at El Roccos in Kings Cross is our friend, Damien Binder. Now, don’t make the same mistake I made… it’s Binder like “blinder” … and if you like David Gray, Ron Sexsmith and the like, you should come along and join me at the show.

I’m feeling flush, so I might even buy you a beer!

In Other News…

Kicking off next week will be our Live In The Studio initiative

from Damien Gerard’s. Each night we will have an exclusive performance by one of our acts that will be filmed and recorded in front of an intimate (and very lucky) audience.

Sponsored by Serafino Wines we will be posting tracks on You Tube and releasing some new tracks on iTunes. Should be a hoot, and I will post more info about it next week.

What Would Dave Do?

He’d say “I’ll take you up on that beer, Pete!”
