Welcome to the Fog Blog #34

Revolutionising the music business twice a week… for one week only

Everyone is entitled to my opinion...

Is Melbourne better than Sydney?

Depends…

The recent proposed changes to Melbourne’s licensing laws that make it harder for late opening venues to have musical acts playing there certainly brought out the best in that city. New industry bodies were created, the local media went into a frenzy and 10,000 people protested in the streets to have the laws changed.

Too late to save the iconic Tote venue in Collingwood, but an excellent example of the differences between the two cities.

When the Hopetoun Hotel in Surry Hills, Sydney was threatening to close last year, we all joined the “Save The Hopetoun” Facebook page.

It closed.

(Dear Melbourne readers… I know that the protest happened AFTER the state government agreed to review the laws… but the sentence reads better that way… never let the truth etc etc…)

Punk is Dead: Official

I am probably the least cool person in the Australian music industry.

I never got punk and I didn’t like the Clash. That last bit of information alone is enough to have me kicked out of the building… but quite frankly I didn’t really get what the hell they were talking about (I was in primary school when they first came out). Still, a lot of people love them and believe in what they stood for.

So it must come as quite a shock to their punk sensibilities to see these latest Converse runners with Clash branding.

Insert lame Clash puns here… Sandshoe-dinista, Rock The Footpath…etc etc..

AIR IT

Every now and then I include something really useful in this blog, mainly to break up the lame stories of hair metal bands (that I know you all secretly love) and partly because we actually care. A couple of weeks ago there was the article about email subject lines, which I know you all read and loved...well, the nerds out there at least...

This week I wanted to let you know, particularly if you are in an indie band, about the new AMRAP initiative called AIR IT. Basically if you have a CD out and you want to get it on to community radio, this is the best way to do it. Previously it was only open to acts signed to a label, but now any indie act can do it.

Imagine not having to send half of your initial CD pressing to AMRAP in the hope that some part time uni student at 2 BOB in Bourke might hear your music and decide to play it. Now you only have to upload the tracks you want and it’s available to everyone for airplay. Sweet.

Even my band is getting airplay…in Kempsey… the home of Slim Dusty.

Check out the link to AIR IThere.

Grunge is Dead: Official

In honour of the Winter Olympics and how much everyone loves the figure skating…

As much as Kurt Cobain would be spinning in his grave, what really irks me is that Courtney is probably making money out of this.

Next week, Russian figure skaters do Metallica.

You Can’t Spell Star Without A&R

I may have been too harsh a couple of weeks ago…

Seems that there are still some people out there with a soft spot for A&R people and how they can help artists to deliver (arguably) better records. Check out this article for details.

BTW, I don’t like the Jam or Blur either.

Or Radiohead.

Guvera

Last year I couldn’t stop blathering on about Spotify.

They are about to launch in the US and fingers crossed that means they might be here by the end of the year. I even signed up for their newsletter! I was so excited when it arrived last week… except it was all in French…

Anyway, an Australian company is about to launch a similar ad-funded free music download site called Guvera. They have a heap of advertisers already on board, roughly 300,000 tracks to choose from and a pretty nifty interface with a very good sounding player.

I’ve been playing with their beta site for the past couple of weeks and whilst it still has a couple of glitches, if the catalogue could be expanded (and tracks were easier to find) it could be a goer. If not, it will be consigned to the scrap-heap of ad-funded music download failures…which considering the relatively brief history of the internet, is vast.

Guvera is scheduled to launch in the US on March 30.

What Would Dave Do?

Dunno… but I can’t wait for the footy season to start… .
