Welcome to the Fog Blog #37

Revolutionising the music business ona weekly basis...

Everyone is entitled to my opinion...

I really should just let it go…

It’s not healthy and I am not doing myself any favours at all… but I am still cranky about Lisa Mitchell winning the AMP Award.

I thought I was OK about it. I hadn’t thought about it for a day or so, my blood pressure had returned to something resembling normal and the healing process, it seemed, had begun.

But then I picked up a copy of our Esteemed Music Industry Journal and read an article about Lisa and her win. The article mentioned the judging charter for the AMP says that mainstream success of a record cannot have a bearing on the result… and then goes on to say, “This is the strongest indication that Mitchell won this award based solely on the quality of her record”.

I don’t know what sort of logic by-pass the author of that line had, but that doesn’t even make any sense. The judges said that commercial success is not a factor, therefore it isn’t…just because they say so? Yeah right…

My Cranky-o-meter is waaay in the red.

Music + Advertising = Sales

Way back in Fog Blog #35 I dedicated virtually a whole post to selling out. It seems that quite a few of you were interested in that stuff and this week I found an interesting article about a guy in the US whose job it is to match music with the right product. He has a refreshing approach to it and is under no illusions as to what his role is… he’s there to sell burgers and beer…but comes from a music playing and producing background.

Check the whole article out here.

Touring Bands Is Hard

And water is wet…

I am full of useful facts today…but if you are an indie act or band manager, this is the one article worth reading this week. Like most things in the music industry, the best way to learn about how to tour a band is to well, tour a band. It’s not rocket surgery… and you don’t need a license… it’s kind of like becoming a Buddhist… you just tell everyone that you’re going to do it and there you are…a tour manager!

Fortunately, there are some kind-hearted folk at Artist Farm who want to help out. They have written a handbook for acts about touring a band and best of all, it’s FREE. You can download it here and all they ask in return is that you tell them if it was helpful. Sweet huh?

Nerd Alert

Mastering is my favourite part of the record making process. It’s the point where everything finally comes together and your song suddenly sounds like a “record”. I love that.

So, for anyone else out there remotely interested in record mastering, please read this article on Denis Beckham.

Or skip down to see what David Lee Roth is up to this week…

UK Magazine Readers Are Idiots: Fact.

I used to read Q magazine. Back in the day when I could claim it on my expenses, I used to pick it up every month and read all their little hidden jokes and obscure Spinal Tap references, thinking how clever I was. But something has happened with their readership in the UK. They have all seemingly lost the plot.

In a recent poll, readers were asked to vote for their favourite rock frontman of all time. And out of all the possible choices including people like Freddie Mercury, Robert Plant, Bon Scott and our favourite here at the Fog Blog, David Lee Roth, they chose Liam Gallagher from Oasis.

That’s right, the man famous for singing with a distinctive flat nasal twang, who dances on stage like a monkey and thinks stage craft is all about balancing a tambourine on your head is the best frontman of all time.

So it kind of got me thinking…

What Would Dave Do?

After he stopped laughing, he spin around in the air, do a reverse kick, grab the microphone and wink at the cute girl in the front row whilst flicking her a backstage pass… and then he’d say “Liam who?”
