Revolutionising the music business ona weekly basis...

Everyone is entitled to my opinion...

Last week I helped put on a charity event at the Gaelic Theatre in Surry Hills. It was called Perform4YourCharity and was dreamt up by Simon Cranley. It was a huge night and we raised somewhere in the vicinty of $10,000 for 10 different charities... but it nearly didn't happen.

I spent weeks trying to think of everything that could go wrong before the event so I was prepared for any eventuality on the night. After checking all my spreadsheets and making sure I had everyone's mobile number in my phone, I was feeling pretty confident before I walked in the door of the venue.

Damn... the Venue! I forgot to check the venue!

When I arrived, the place looked like a bomb had hit it. Admittedly we knew they were renovating, but we'd been assured that they would be finished by the time of our show. Looking at the venue at 3 in the afternoon, I seriously doubted this was possible.

There was so much dust on the bar I could write my name in it. There was no PA or lighting system in place, wires hung from the ceiling and somewhat inconveniently, there was a cement mixer in the doorway. This didn't look good.

After a quick chat to the bar manager and the stage guy, I was assured that everything would be OK before doors opened at 7pm. That was only four hours away..

True to their word, the venue pulled out all the stops and at 5 minutes to 7, they wiped down the bar for the 10th time and the place looked like a venue again. People were even queued up out the front waiting to get in! No one who attended the night would have known the condition of the room when I first walked in there. Once the lighting went down and there was music playing and people drinking, the room looked a treat.

Big thanks to all the acts who played on the night, including Johnny Zoch, Mandi Jarry and Impro Australia who took the first, secong and third prizes on the night. Also thanks to Natalie and Jen our production girls who kept the show running, plus Steve our sound guy and Sam for setting up the lights and making sure the drum kit would look good on video!

And huge thanks to Erin from The Gaelic who made the venue work.

iPad – Definitely Named by a Guy

Apple’s new iPad went on sale this week. They have already sold 300,000 of them. At an average price of US$400 that comes to $120 million dollars. In the first week! And look what’s inside them!

As with all things Apple, it raises more questions about what Apple are doing with music. Seeing as they have “revolutionised the music industry” with the iPod and iTunes, you’d expect something great for the iPad too.

Maybe… maybe not just yet…

Plans are afoot to release a cloud-based music streaming service later in the year, which would be a competitor to Spotify (I still miss you Spotify…) and another potential game changer. You can read about it all here.

Useful Information –

"Now With It’s Own Heading"

The way music is marketed these days is a great example of how the internet has changed the way we do things. In the past, record companies would work very hard to build awareness and demand for a product, then make it available and manage that availability over the life of the campaign. Sometimes this meant making an item scarce in order to maintain demand and subsequent higher prices.

But now, the music savvy pop fan doesn’t understand the need to wait for product. If they hear about a new artist, they want to know about them now. And then they want another new song… and then another… like, what’s an album again?

If you are a 15 year old girl and you’re reading this (highly unlikely, I know…) or have kids that age, you will know about Justin Bieber. He is the latest teen heart-throb for girls who are over the Jonas Brothers but are too young for that scary stuff from the Twilight soundtrack.

This is a fascinating article on how his music has been marketed in the current fast paced internet society. Basically it is a lot of product released over a short period of time.

Speaking of Spotify…

I know… I can hardly let a week go by without mentioning them… so I will keep it short. They are still coming to Australia… but not till next year. Bummer.

Sharon Jones New Album - Hooray!

We are very excited to hear that the new Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings album is being released shortly. When I was searching for it yesterday I stumbled across the new Lime Wire Store in the US. Remember how Lime Wire was once the enemy of the music business, what with all the file sharing, piracy and generally not paying for stuff?

Well, now that they’ve gone legit, their new store is pretty cool. You can’t buy anything from there yet as it is only available to American citizens, but as a way to preview new releases, I was pretty impressed with the whole experience.

Check it out here.
