Revolutionising the music business ona weekly basis...

Everyone is entitled to my opinion...

Record Store Day…

I want to like the idea. I want to support it. But I don’t like that fact that it exists.

From me, record store day used to be the same as Pay Day. I’d take all my money to a local record store (that actually sold vinyl records) and buy whatever new releases I wanted and then spend the whole weekend listening to them. Not whilst I was texting, emailing, IM’ing or talking on the phone… I would sit there and listen to a record from start to finish and nothing else.

Now, we have to have a special annual day to encourage people to even go to a record store, because no-one goes there any more.

Now, I am not a luddite. I appreciate the digital revolution as much as the next person, but the way people experience music has changed irrevocably and I doubt that something that is potentially as tokenistic as Record Store Day will be enough to save them (the stores) from extinction.

Making Money Online

Speaking of the digital revolution, apparently people are making money from the internet. I know, it’s a crazy concept…

When it comes to music acts, there is a lot of talk about labels licensing their catalogue to some whiz bang new download service that guarantees to pay the artists involved whilst “revolutionising the music industry”. But just how much money do the artists actually make?

Not much.

There was a great quote a couple of years ago from the head of NBC (I think) bemoaning the changes the internet had caused to the way the entertainment industry gets paid now. He said “We’ve swapped analog dollars for digital pennies”. And he’s right. But now were even talking about fractions of a cent… to a certain extent, this article is heart breaking…

Speaking of Spotify…

This might as well become a weekly section…

Following on from my previous piece about “digital pennies” here is another article relating to the small amounts that artists now receive from streaming services such as Spotify.

Again, the article is a little depressing, but once everyone gets a taste of using Spotify and enjoys the ease of discovering new (and old) music and can purchase tracks at the click of a button, well, at least some of those pennies will start adding up.

Blowing Our Own Trumpet

One of the most enduring products that we have here at Foghorn is the soundslikecafe CD series. It has been running since 2003 and we are currently booking tracks for Volume 30. That’s right, we’ve released 30 CD’s for cafés and restaurants around the country to play for your listening pleasure whilst you sip your double decaf soy cappuccino with no chocolate.

soundslikecafe word cloud… nice.

We have had a total of 504 tracks and 364 individual artists on the series so far.

Well worth letting the world know about, I reckon.

Charity Gig – Blatant Self Promotion

Just a quick note regarding the charity gig I worked on a couple of weeks ago. Check out this awesome photo of the winner from the night, Johnny Zoch, playing to the crowd at Perform4YourCharity.

I don’t know about the bass player, but the drummer was great!

What Would Dave Do?

Wow, imagine if Dave had been in Avatar. This is probably what he would look like.
