Welcome to the Fog Blog #4

Revolutionising the music industry... every Thursday,

...except last week.

Three Strings and the Truth
I saw Seasick Steve this morning. He was walking through Hyde Park past the Shrine of Remembrance enjoying an early morning stroll. He had a walking stick and doesn't look much like a rock star. But, Susan Boyle aside, he's one of the hottest acts in the world right now.

There was a review of Steve's show in Sydney last week in the paper. Sounds like one of those "you had to be there" moments... and I wish I had been... because what could do more to restore your faith in music than a 60-something blues/country slide guitar playing growler with a stomp box and a guitar with only three strings?

Watching Steve on "Spicks and Specks" last week you could almost see how excited they were to have him on the show. It's not often you get the real deal on that program. No offence to the very talented people that do make it on that show, but Steve not only has buckets of charisma, he's also got one thing that truly sets him apart from everything else in the charts right now... Truth.

You Can't Spell Star Without A&R

Being an A&R manager is a sure fire way to attract loonies. The fact that you stand in their way to becoming an "international world wide smash" just seems to make them try that little bit harder. Sometimes, they try too much... like the guy who claimed to be Shania Twain's husband, who lived in Adelaide out of the back of his Ford Falcon and had co-written every song with her. Or the guy that smuggled a demo tape out of Long Bay Jail. I couldn't work out what was creepier... the fact that he managed to get our address whilst inside a jail or the spoken introductions that explained the meaning behind each song that just got more graphic and weird as the tape went along.

But one of my all time favourite stories is the guy who claimed that Michael Jackson had stolen his song. He would regularly fax the office and copy in Tommy Mottola and Don Ienner from Sony in the US. He was very keen to get his song back and to be paid the royalties that he was "owed". He provided detailed background into the writing of the track, where he was when he wrote it, what the song was about... even the concept for the video. In fact the only thing that was different about it was the title. When he wrote it, it was called "Driller".

And in honour of Michael Jackson, this is just so weird, I think I will just link it without passing comment... enjoy...

Everyone Is Entitled To My Opinion

Here at Foghorn we love the absurdity of rock n' roll and the joyous, visceral beauty of a sub-three minute pop song. We love artists who get up on stage and entertain. And we love artists that don't take themselves too seriously... why else do you think we have David Lee Roth as our patron saint? But if I read one more bloated, self-important piece of name-dropping and mangled metaphors from the frontman of U2, I'll scream...

This week's gratuitous photo of

David Lee Roth.....
