Revolutionising the music business on a weekly basis...

Everyone is entitled to my opinion...

I have a confession to make…

No, not like in the Catholic Church sense…

It’s just that this year is an election year, and frankly, I am finding myself more and more interested in politics than music. I have no idea how or why this started, but I follow more political journalists on Twitter than I do musos. And the UK election is on today (tonight) and I get the feeling I will be staying up and watching the results online.

I could argue that elections have more of an effect on people’s lives than pop music, although I’d agree that it is very hard to dance to an election. But everything in the world is in upheaval (global financial markets, the entire Greek economy, music bloggers writing about politics… and Justin Bieber’s ignorance of anything other than basketball) and elections only happen every couple of years, whereas I can listen to music any old time.

So tonight I have turned down the chance to go to a gig to watch another country’s general election on the internet.

The world is a very strange place.

Record Store Day A Success - Part 2

I think record Store Day is starting to get a little cocky now…

Not only did RSD achieve the amazing feat of getting people to shop in, um… record stores, it also produced the largest ever single day sales figures for vinyl albums ever recorded in the US. Now, if only we could work out how to download vinyl…

Album of the Year!

If the year is 2008…

Butch Walker’s “Sycamore Meadows” was originally recorded in 2008 but has only just been released in Australia through StockExchange/Sony this year, so technically it qualifies for my Album of the Year.

How did I manage to miss this record???

If you want the whole Butch walker story, I recommend you check out his Wikipedia entry. It reads like the most interesting music career you’ve almost never heard of. Frankly, I would be writing about him for his involvement with the best single of last year (Weezer’s “If You’re Wondering If I Want You, I want You To…” which he co-wrote and produced) alone, but after hearing “Sycamore…” a few thousand times, I am convinced that not only do I love the record, I would also like to change places with him.

Whilst I am in a confessional mood, I would like to say that I do not listen to lyrics. Ever. I don’t care what singers have got to say, which let’s admit it, is usually “I love you, you don’t love me…” and variations thereof. In fact, I am still discovering what the lyrics are to Jane’s Addiction’s “Nothing Shocking” album, which came out in 1989. But I put on “Sycamore…” and I actually want to know what he’s saying. The lyrics are clever, personal and, often, hilarious.

If only every artist could write lyrics like him… I might start listening to them more.

Did I mention he also produced Pink’s last two albums, Katie Perry’s album and has been writing with Taylor Swift? He’s really very good.

Geek Alert

Just a quick one this week…

Hands up who loves analogue synths?

I couldn’t resist reading this article as it has that lovely gentle obsessiveness that I love about music nerds and tech heads.

Shine on you crazy losers…

Pete’s Predictions – Coming True?

Not this one…

Late last year I predicted that the ARIA Awards would not be televised in 2010. After the debacle that was Channel 9’s bargain basement broadcast of the 2009 awards, I suggested that they go back to being an industry-only affair with no TV coverage. Obviously, that was an insane idea because the industry desperately needs all the mainstream support it can get, so it was hardly surprising to hear today that Channel 10 have picked up the rights to broadcast the 2010 ARIA Awards.

And let’s face it, at least the target market actually watch programs on Channel 10.

What Would Dave Do?

Now Dave knows how to write a good lyric…

”Thought you’d never miss me till I got a fat city address, non-stop talker, what a rocker, blue-eyed murder in a size five dress”

Poetry…
