Welcome to the Fog Blog #50

Revolutionising the music business on a weekly basis...

Everyone is entitled my opinion...

Welcome to the election that just keeps on giving...

I have spent the best part of the last seven days glued to Twitter following this somewhat unprecedented moment in our electoral history. I now know more about our system of government than I ever learnt in school plus I know where the electorates of Hasluck, Kennedy, New England, Chifley and Corangamite actually are. This effectively doubles my knowledge of electoral boundaries...

Despite not delivering any actual result so far, the election promises to shake up things in parliament. We are lucky we have a fairly transparent form of government so we can watch events as they unfold. The counting process is certainly very rigorous. I have been fascinated by the AEC website and the amount of detail that is available.

And the ABC site has been incredibly well frequented by me in the past week. Having election expert Anthony Green constantly updating the count via Twitter posts and their live election blog has utterly changed the way we follow results. I am in political nerd heaven!

But if you really want to know exactly what is going on in the election right now, you just need to click on this one site: http://doesaustraliahaveagovernmentyet.com/

Bleeding Hearts

Last blog I referred to the Don Watson’s book about Paul Keating “Recollections of a Bleeding Heart”. The book talks about how there are two types of people in politics: the Pointy Heads, who are only interested in economics, and Bleeding Hearts, who actually care about people. I have long drawn a similar comparison to the music industry.

We have Bean Counters and Music People. The Bean Counters don’t care about anything except keeping an eye on recording/marketing/advertising budgets and their company’s chart share, whilst the Music People actually want to support great artists and make great records. Music People also go to gigs, genuinely care about the careers of acts they work with and are responsible for helping to deliver great records that last the test of time.

Bean Counters have a place in the business, no doubt. But they shouldn’t be put completely in charge... ever.

Speaking Of Which...

I remember, years ago, receiving a call from a friend (hi Kirsty!) about a work experience kid she had in her office who was looking for more work in the music industry. At the time we didn’t have any positions available, but I remember hearing more and more about this guy...totally immersed in music, even set up his own Grinspoon fan website...he was keen, that’s for sure.

We used to go to a lot of the same gigs and got to know each other. Somehow I vaguely recall writing a reference for him when he was applying for a role at EMI in their A&R department. It must have been a glowing reference, because Craig Hawker ended up being at EMI for TEN years. You get less than that for manslaughter these days...

Craig has recently decided to step away from EMI and take a break. It is extremely rare after being in A&R for an Australian record label that you get to leave on your own terms, let alone with any integrity intact, but that’s exactly what Craig is doing.

I hope he’s not gone for long.

Craig is a true Music Person... and we need them more than ever.

Music + Golf = Zero

I have said it before and I will say it again...golf and music do not mix. And this video is living proof of my long and deeply held prejudices.

Speaking Of Living Proof...

“Living Proof” is the second track from The Stoics latest EP Death Machine. We are very pleased to announce that the first track from the EP “Doom Girl” is currently receiving spot play on Triple J.

To celebrate this incredible result, I have five copies of said EP to giveaway to the first people to answer the question, “What is the second track from The Stoics latest EP?”

Good luck kids.

What Would Dave Do?

He wouldn’t play golf dressed like that, that’s for sure.
